Summary

  • The Arcane Staff is a new class of weapon that is designed around supporting "pure mage" builds

Crafting

  • Players can craft Arcane Staves using the Carpentry skill under the Arcane Staves category
  • Arcane Staves are treated as normal weapons for crafting and can be Exceptional Quality, Mastercrafted, and made with Colored Materials (such as Avarwood)

Skills for Arcane Staves

  • Arcane Staves are two-handed equippable weapons
  • A player's chance to Hit/Defend with an Arcane Staff equipped is based on their Arcane skill, but is also capped by their Wrestling skill
  • Players will need both Arcane Skill and Wrestling skill to effectively use Arcane Staves

Combat Mechanics

  • Arcane Staves function as normal weapons when making melee attacks and receive all the normal bonuses granted to weapons from Magical/Crafted properties, Aspect Bonuses, Mastery Chains, Skill Bonuses, Slayer Damage, etc
  • Arcane Staves act as Ranged Weapons with Range 12
  • Arcane Staves do not require any Ammunition to fire
  • Arcane Staves are unique weapons that ignore their target's Armor, and instead has its Damage reduced by the target's Effective Magic Resist

Arcane Weapon Special: Hex

The Arcane Weapon Special "Hex" has the following handling:

  • Damage is increased by 50%
  • Applies a Hex effect reducing the creature's Magic Resist by 50 for 8-15 seconds (scaled by weapon speed)
  • If the creature already has an Effective Magic Resist of 0 prior to the attack, the Damage of the Weapon Special will be increased by a further 50%

Arcane Buildup

  • Players using Arcane Staves will generate an "Arcane Buildup" effect when fighting creatures
  • Successful hits with an Arcane Staff on a creature will increase a player's Arcane Buildup by (20% * (Arcane Skill / 100))
  • Players can reach a maximum Arcane Buildup of 100%
  • Players will also see an overhead meter showing their current Arcane Buildup whenever it changes (this meter will not be visible to other players)

Arcane Buildup Bonuses

  • Players receive a Spell Damage bonus against creatures equal to their current (Arcane Buildup * 50%)
  • Players receive a Damage Resistance bonus against creatures equal to their current (Arcane Buildup * 25%)
Example:
  • A player has inflicted 4 hits recently with an Arcane Staff and has generated an Arcane Buildup of 80%
  • The player's Spell Damage against all creatures will be increased by (80% * 50%) = +40%
  • The player will also have a Damage Resistance bonus against all creatures of (80% * 25%) = +20%

Buildup Restrictions

  • Players will only receive their bonuses from Arcane Buildup while equipped with an Arcane Staff
  • Arcane Staves require the player to "concentrate" and they cannot be distracted by maintaining Followers or performing Barding actions
  • Players will have their Arcane Buildup set to 0% if they ever have any Followers under their control (Mounts will be ignored)
  • Players will have their Arcane Buildup set to 0% if they have used a Barding skill in the last 60 seconds

Buildup Decay

  • For every 10 seconds that pass where the player has not landed a successful Arcane Staff hit against a creature, the player's Arcane Buildup will decay by 20% (down to a minimum of 0%)

Casting While Equipped

  • Players can cast spells (including during PvP) while equipped with an Arcane Staff if they have both at least 80 Arcane skill and 80 Wrestling skill

Attacking While Casting

  • Players can to continue to make Arcane Staff attacks even while in the process of casting or holding a spell

Arcane Staves in PvP

  • Hits from an Arcane Staff against other players will not cause Spell Interrupts

Spell Interruption While Casting

  • Players will have an (Effective Arcane Skill / 100%)) chance to avoid Spell Interruption from Creature/Environment Damage while casting with an Arcane Staff equipped
  • PvP-based interrupts while casting with an Arcane Staff equipped will be resolved as normal using the player's Wrestling skill
